Summarize

Using a Sequence of Events Chart record the events in each chapter in Gray Whales.  Then use your chart to summarize the infromation in this week's story.

Think and Compare

1. Skim Chapter 2.  Tell what happens when a calf is born.  Describe a calf's first few months after birth.

2. Think about what a baby whale learns in the first weeks and months after the whale is born.  What were the things your parents did to take care of you in the first year or two after you were born?  What was some of the first things you learned?

3. What are the key threats to gray whales from humans?  What can different humans do the help protect the gray whales?

A Whale Story

Pretend you are a baby gray whale.  Write about the first months of your life.  Describe your life in the lagoons of Mexico and the things that you have learned while living there.  Include how you feel about being a baby, how you go about learning new things, and how you feel about the other whales around you.
