Women in Flight

Summarize

Using an Author's Perspective Chart record clues about one of the women flyers in Women in Flight.  Briefly explain who she was and what she did.  Then summarize the author's opinion about the woman you choose.

Think and Compare

1.  Look on page 13.  How does the author feel about the many challenges that Bessie Coleman faced in her quest to become a airplane pilot?

2.  The women in Women in Flight wanted to fly.  What dreams do you have?  What would you have to do to make these dreams come true?  What challenges would you face?

3.  Why were the achievements of these women so important?  How did they help change the role of women all around the world?

Interviewing a Pilot

Becoming a pilot requires courage and determination.  Pretend that you are going to interview a pilot.  Write a series of questions that you would ask the pilot.  Then with a group member, conduct the interview.
